The cover and the title made me want to read this book, and I'm so happy I did. It was nothing like I expected it to be, and I mean that in a good way. Every single character was a pleasure to read about, I just wanted to learn more and more about them. There are steampunk and fantasy elements throughout, which I loved. But what I loved even more was that none of it was overdone. None of it took away from the characters, which was my favorite thing about this book. It's very character based. The world itself is reminiscent of the Middle Ages with a mixture of steampunk and fantasy. I'm super excited to read more from this series and from this author in general.

on The Acros Raiders: From the Ashes

It's a bit of a mystery, a Sci fi, and a fantasy novel woven with care. The found family aspect feels a bit like Avatar the last Airbender, although the environment and stakes are much more different. Scotty isn't the chosen one. She chooses the whole adventure. It's witty, real, and the protagonist is a girl which is also pretty nice in a world full of Tolkien and Harry Potter. If you grew up liking Katniss Everdeen's resourcefulness, this just might be for you.

Author Sara Tunder uses all her talents for description and pacing to bring readers a thrilling and action-packed fantasy with high stakes and unpredictable twists aplenty. I really enjoyed the combination of the interpersonal drama between members of the team as they are challenged by the wider world around them, and the characters were each drawn with great contrasts that bring different qualities out in each other - both for better and for worse! The immersive world-building is a real cinematic treat for the imagination and makes it easy to see and feel the epic scale of the conflict with vivid descriptions of airship battles and steampunk-like warfare. Pinpoint precision in the narration brings it all back to our heroes and how they feel. Overall, The Acros Raiders: Down in Flames is a great continuation of the series that I would recommend.
